Details of the much-anticipated VCT Masters Tokyo event have finally been released, and people are getting excited. Riot Games has made a fantastic announcement: this tournament will feature a GSL format group stage, a double elimination playoff stage, and a stunning record prize pool.
This announcement comes as more teams have qualified and the start date is getting closer.
While the tournament’s format is not shocking, as it is consistent with prior VCT Masters tournaments, the amount of prize money has surprised many. Traditionally, the prize pools in VCT Masters events have been far lower than those at the much more prestigious World Championship.
VCT Masters Tokyo To Offer $1 Million Prize Pool
The Valorant Champions 2021 and 2022 tournaments, for instance, each had a $1 million prize pool, and the participating teams additionally shared in 50% of the revenue generated from the sale of skins used in the event. As the first Masters-level tournament ever to provide a $1 million prize pool, however, the VCT Masters Tokyo will be a historic event.

Over the preceding two years, the $800,000 prize pool at Masters Berlin in 2021 was the largest of the four Masters events. Three partnered VCT international leagues have since been added to the VCT circuit, though, so things have definitely changed.
Because of these changes and other decisions made by Riot Games, the 2023 schedule has only one Masters-level event, Masters Tokyo. This year began with VCT LOCK//IN, an international tournament held in Brazil with a $500,000 prize pool and the debut of Riot’s new Valorant esports format.
The disparity in prize money might be attributed to the fact that teams were not required to qualify for this event.
Let’s take a look at how the VCT Masters Tokyo’s amazing $1 million prize pool will be divided up among the competing teams.
1st place: $350,000
- 2nd place: $200,000
- 3rd place: $125,000
- 4th place: $75,000
- 5th place: $50,000
- 6th place: $50,000
- 7th place: $35,000
- 8th place: $35,000
- 9th place: $25,000
- 10th place: $25,000
- 11th place: $15,000
- 12th place: $15,000
To sum up, the forthcoming VCT Masters Tokyo event is poised to be a watershed moment in Valorant esports. There will be tremendous competition and exciting displays of talent thanks to the GSL format group stage, double elimination playoff bracket, and record-breaking $1 million prize pool.
