If you are new to VALORANT or just starting to explore the game’s agents, it can be challenging to decide which agent to pick as your main. After all, each agent comes with unique abilities and roles that contribute differently to a team. In this blog post, we will go over a summary of the four agent roles in VALORANT: Duelist, Sentinel, Controller, and Initiator.
Now, let’s explore the different agent roles in Valorant:
Duelist
The duelist role is the most common agent that everyone likes to play. It’s a fun role to play, and its utility-kit is quite selfish, which is why many players prefer it. The main job of a duelist is to enter the bomb site first and create space for the team. They are expected to perform well and seek out early engagements to get an early kill for the team. All the duelists in VALORANT, including Jett, Phoenix, Reyna, Neon, Raze, and Yoru, are excellent agents to main. Jett, in particular, is one of the most popular agents in ranked games, thanks to her strong dash and smokes that enable players to take up a lot of space. If you’re not confident in your aim or are new to the game, it’s best to avoid picking up duelists right away.
Sentinel
The sentinel role is a support role that focuses on defending and holding a bomb site. Sentinels often have abilities that allow them to detect or deter enemies, and they are usually the last line of defense for a team. If you prefer a more defensive playstyle and enjoy holding down bomb sites, you may want to consider playing a sentinel. Some of the best sentinel agents to main include Sage, Cypher, and Killjoy. In the majority of my games, I prefer playing as a sentinel because it requires a more passive style of play. While on attack, sentinels should ideally keep an eye on the team’s back by holding flank attacks.
Controller
Controllers are agents that control the bomb site by limiting enemy movement, vision, and access to areas. They can cut off entire sections of a map, forcing enemies to play around their abilities, smoke abilities to be specific. If you enjoy manipulating the bomb site and controlling the flow of the game, then the controller role is for you. Some of the best agents to main in this role include Viper, Brimstone, and Omen. When it comes to fighting, controllers are the last to get involved. They must keep an eye on the mini-map and ensure that they are still alive in order to provide smokes to their teammates as needed. Don’t get me wrong, there are incredibly aggressive plays for agents like Omen, but that is a one-off strategy that only works when the enemy has their guard down.
Initiator
Finally, initiators are agents that provide their team with information and enable them to push onto bomb sites. They often have abilities that allow them to reveal enemies’ positions, stun them, or flush them out of cover. If you prefer a more supportive role and enjoy setting up your team for success, then the initiator role is for you. Some of the best initiator agents to play include Sova, Breach, and Skye.
Picking your main agent in Valorant depends on your playstyle and how you enjoy contributing to your team. By understanding the different agent roles and their unique abilities, you can choose the one that best fits your preferences. Whether you prefer a more aggressive playstyle as a duelist or enjoy controlling the flow of the game as a controller, there is an agent for every playstyle in Valorant.
