Since its Netflix debut, One Piece has dominated discussions and quickly risen to the top of the charts in over fifty different countries. Fans were excited for a One Piece crossover because Fortnite has worked with other games before, especially anime like Dragon Ball Z and Attack on Titan.
Now that it’s official, people haven’t been very happy about it. Here’s an in-depth look at why.
Fortnite’s influence in merging the worlds of anime and gaming is undeniable. Through these collaborations, Fortnite players have been introduced to new anime stories, showcasing the genre’s increasing global influence.
The Fortnite x One Piece Saga: High Hopes to Disappointment?
From Goku to All Might, players have not only purchased in-game cosmetics inspired by their favorite anime characters but have also enjoyed emulating their unique abilities. Jujutsu Kaisen marked the most recent anime inclusion in Fortnite, setting high expectations for the One Piece collaboration.
The Fortnite x One Piece crossover, while long-anticipated, didn’t exactly align with fans’ expectations. Intended to celebrate the Netflix adaptation of the beloved anime, the crossover was presented differently than prior ones.
This Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) creation by 3dlab allows players to experience naval battles as Straw Hat pirates or Marines, engaging in 3v3 battles using swords, cannons, and pistols.
However, this wasn’t what many had envisioned. Players yearned for in-game cosmetics similar to past anime collaborations. Concepts for Luffy and Roronoa Zoro skins had been circulating on social media, leading many to believe they would accompany the crossover.
The response was immediate, with fans expressing their dismay on various platforms. Comments ranged from, “Huge L + not what we want” to the straightforward, “That was just a lousy anime-themed pirate mode.”
With the release of the One Piece live-action and Ashoka series, some fans believe Fortnite missed the mark, with one stating, “that was a big L to Fortnite taking opportunities.”
Yet, for those still curious to explore this new crossover, they can access the island using the in-game code (7374-8187-1871) or save it to their playlists via the official experience page.
While it remains to be seen if there will be further developments or adjustments to the One Piece crossover based on feedback, the episode serves as a reminder that while collaborations can offer fantastic opportunities for crossover between fanbases, aligning expectations is key.
