We regret to inform you that Froskurinn, a well-known and respected League of Legends broadcaster and analyst, has decided to retire.. Froskurinn recently remarked in a tweet that the esports sector is “very messed up,” and that it’s time for her to break away from the esports industry.
With a career that has spanned years and a wealth of knowledge that includes professional play, coaching, and commentary, Froskurinn has been a pioneer in the esports community. Her insightful analysis and knowledgeable commentary have been mainstays in many of the most iconic moments in the history of League of Legends esports competitions.
However, Froskurinn’s retirement is a loss for the whole esports business, not just the League of Legends community. Her tweet highlighted the several problems that plagued the sector, including toxicity, fatigue, a lack of mental health care and fair compensation. These concerns are not new and must be addressed.
It is evident that more must be done to help the mental health of professional athletes, coaches, and commentators, as the pressure to succeed and achieve can be overwhelming. Moreover, as shown by Froskurinn’s retirement, these concerns affect not only the players but also the entire ecosystem that supports the game.
A great number of casters and professionals who are not players have previously experienced conflicts with the esports sector. After CourageJD went on an expletive-filled rant against “Mechs” in Fortnite, he was asked to leave the game. It is something that he regrets to this day that he said such things, but it does raise the question of whether or not commentators and analysts are required to keep their honest feelings about the game to themselves.
The fact that Froskurinn is leaving the esports sector serves as a powerful reminder that the industry as a whole needs to take action to address the issues that are causing talented individuals like her to leave the field. The moment has come for organisations, teams, and leagues to stand up and make esports better for everyone who is participating in them.
We wish Froskurinn the best of luck in her future ventures and thank her for her tremendous efforts and commitment to the League of Legends community and the esports industry in general. She will be missed on-stage dearly, but her impact will continue. It is now our responsibility to ensure that her retirement does not become the norm and to build a better and healthier esports ecosystem for everyone.
